Letter Assignment - Day 1

Dear Students,

Welcome back to a new school year! This is my fifth year teaching math at Rogers, and I am sure it will be a great year. I graduated from WSU in 2011 with a degree in math and education. Last summer, I enrolled in the WSU Graduate School to begin my Masters. I will be taking classes at night, so I will be having homework this year just like you. If you can’t tell, I am a huge Cougar fan and I love football. So you can expect to hear about WSU and the Seahawks on a regular basis.

I love to be active and have practiced and performed aerial arts for 5 years. I have taken a break from that for a while to finish my masters but I am still working on it with some friends. This summer I tried to branch out and went for a few hikes, tried a spin class, a TRX class and BoxFit. I am always up for new ways to get up and move. Fun fact about me, I know how to eat fire and I can solve a rubix cube; although, not at the same time (ha!).

In high school, I was a pole vaulter and a gymnast. Now, I coach pole vault, I help with gymnastics when I can and I am also the advisor for the cheer team at Rogers. I really do understand that everyone has responsibilities outside of math class (including me), but I do expect your full effort, focus and attention when you are in class with me. I will always be honest with you if I have made a mistake or if I am just in a bad mood and I hope you will do the same. I firmly believe that open communication is the key to a great school year.

Again, I am really excited for us to work on lots of math this semester and learn from each other. Thanks for reading a little about me, and I look forward to getting to know all of you better!

ASSIGNMENT
Today or tonight, please write a letter to me to introduce yourself.  Please tell me anything – and everything – you think I need to know about you in order to be a good teacher for you.
I’d like to know about you as a person outside of school as well as about you as a student.

Some students have trouble getting their letter started.  Here are some questions you might want to answer:
  • Who are you?  What interests you?  What is important for me to know in order to understand where you are coming from?
  • How do you relate to other people?  Are you generally loud, quiet, happy, or sad?  How do you interact with teachers?  How do you like teachers to interact with you?
  • What are your goals this year?  Your goals for the rest of high school?  For your life after high school?
  • What do you know about yourself as a learner?  What helps you to succeed?  What do you need from a teacher in order to be successful?
  •  How can I make you comfortable to participate in class?  How do you work best?
  • How do you feel about math?  Are there things that you know you’re good at?  Are there things you would like help with?
